07 Final Major Project
Date Completed: 08 / 05 / 2023

Module: 63_3
Duration: 90 Days

Softwares used:

The Brief:

The brief for the final project is completely open, but must contain a little bit of everything that we have studied throughout the years. As we were encouraged to base the project on something we love I chose techno music, as it’s been something that I’ve been incredibly passionated about since I was 14 years old. I decided that not only I would design my own nightclub, but also a record label, and an event that would take place in the nightclub.

For this project I am officially tasked with creating a techno night club, Record label, and a special event for the nightclub. This will involve branding, web work and video, along with many other smaller things.

Let me present to you, Pulse:

The concept behind this brand is the connection between the techno music and the techno beat, as it’s commonly known that your heartbeat connects with the rythm of the music, and so I wanted to base the brand around this fact.

Brand Manual elements:

When creating the logo, I wanted to make something extremely energetic. Techno is loud, wild and throws itself at you, and I wanted the logo to reflect that, while still keeping its legibility.
The logo comes in about 6 color variations, each one of which can be used freely. The logo can also be placed on the pattern, shown below.
Logo Variations:

Logo Exclusion Zone & Minimum Size:

The Exclusion zone is the diagram explaining the distance which has to remain open around the logo. The logo is split up by a similar grid system with which it was built. Horizontally and vertically, the spacing is split up by 30*15. Doing this shows accurately how I want the space around it to be kept. It’s not large, but it’s good enough for the logo to have the space it needs. No matter what size, the exclusion zone is 4x away from the border of the logo itself.

The next is a diagram showing the minimum size of the logo, which is displayed in px. When I was deciding what to make the minimum size of the logo, I had to take a few things into consideration. First of all, the logo has a lot of the sharp edges all around it, and when lowering hte resolution the energetic spikes would dissapear, turning the logo simply into a typed version of the word. So I tested on Adobe Photoshop different sizes at which I could put the logo, and the smallest that I found that keeps the detail is the current 297x100px.

Color Variations:

On the right is the final version of the color palette, which is simple, but when used together can create a very bold color set to be used together. The colors are meant to represent the blood pulsing of the heartbeat. The Black and Bright Red are meant to be used in a pattern, and the white is meant to be used to contrast both of the two colors.

Pattern Variation:

On the right are two different patterns with which the colors can be presented. These patterns not only acts as aesthetic banners possible on the edges of pages or edges of other products, but are also supposed to show the on and off nature of the heart beat, as between every beat there is a few milliseconds of silence, and then the next beat. Both of these two patterns however have their own place. The first pattern is used more regularly, however the second pattern is used more in situations where there isn’t much space to squeezing the checkered pattern.

Typography:

The fonts I want to use needs to minimalistic, and also has to be interesting and has to match with the techno trends.
There are two main fonts that I chose to use throughout the project, and which will be featured within the branding.

Bebas Neue
The sond font, which is mainly the display font for the brand is Bebas Neue. The font is created by Ryoichi Tsunekawa and it’s purpose was for it to be used as a display font for headlines, captions and packagings.

FF Good Pro:
The font displayed on the left is called FF Good Pro. The original font, called FF Good was created by Łukasz Dziedzic which was a graphic designer and typographer based in Warsaw.
The font features a lot of straight lines and is generally quite tall and narrow compared to some others. Nowadays, due to it’s simplicity and contemporary elements, it’s used often in interface design.
All though it feel contemporary, I want to use this font for the Record Label especially, as I’m hoping for it to contrast well with the grungy style of the branding and hopefully it brings it some professionalism to the label.
The variations used are Light, Regular, Medium, Bold, and Black.

Uniforms:

The uniforms of the nightclub staff are meant to both show the authority in the club, but still show that there is a bit of playfullness and rebellion in the style. The uniforms for both genders are generally the same, but they do have a bit of small differences between each other in tiny details.
The mens uniform features a cotton shirt with red and black stripes. As the nightclub will have those two colors on the walls and also on most of the objects, th eidea is that they are able to immediately recognize whenever ehter is a waiter around. The pants are black and elegant, but rolled up. The shoes are black shiny dress shoes.
The womans outfit features basically the same garments as the men, but do however have to be re-sized to match the proportion of the woman.

Promotional Poster:

On the left you can see a mockup of hte promotional poster for Pulse. I want the poster to scream at the viewer, and to encapture them with it’s energy and the energy of Pulse. This poster could be placed anywhere, from a metro station to a park.

Below there are also information about the event, which are meant to inform the viewer about time and social media, in case they want to buy tickets.

Brochure:

On the right there is the dielines created for the shape of the flyer.
The flyer is created in a way so that it can only be opened in one way, and as the viewer opens up more and more of the flyer, they will uncover more and more information. When the flyer is open, it takes up 140mm x 140mm of space, whereas when it’s closed it takes up 75mm x 75mm of space.

Promotional Video:

The video in the first half is in black and white, and features a lot of dancing and the DJ doing some tricks. Then the video calms down and shows a black and white video, which starts to gain color. This video reads “we are”. This happens during a small break of the song, after which the beat drops and the word Pulse starts flashing on the screen matching with the beat, which makes the pulse feel more initense.

Stage Design:

When I first started designing the stage, I knew from the beggining that I wanted to create something that has the checkered pattern on it, not only to encourage the brand of the record lable as well, but just reinforce the idea of a heartbeat through the checkered pattern.
Most of the asstes were downloaded online, except for the simple things like the screen behind the DJ and the table on which everything is on.

Behind Stage Motion Graphics:

Most of the time at events, it isn’t only the music that takes all the attention, since most of the time there is huge screens that play visuals that entertain the audience and gives them something to look at. A lot of the time the screens aren’t all that big, and are simply behind the DJ to show off his logo while he is performing. Every club does it unique, as some clubs only show off their own logo and branding, and sometimes they even alternate between the two. Depening on the importance of the event, the screens will show some very impressive graphics that will amaze you, so then when they drop the beat, it creates an insane atmosphere. I want to create something like this for the Pulse branding. I want to make something that flashes, but it doesn’t have to be too strong since the lighting in the event does already a lot of the flashing and a lot of the wrok, along with other effects such as the smoke machines and lazers.

Social Media:

On the right is a mockup of how the Pulse Instagram page would look when the user would start following. The profile photo of the instagram page consists of the second variation of the logo. Given that the profile picture is round shaped, the first variation of the logo wouldn’t work because it would appear too small to read and recognize properly, given that the profile picture is also quite small, especially when seen above a post.

Event Signage:

If you try to find your way around the club, and you get lost you can use the signs taht are displayed all over the club, each having its own purpose and designed in a way that is natural and intuitive.

Pulse Website (Desktop):

On the right are some screenshots of the website that was made for the Pusle brand. This website features content for the record label, as it has a page for the releases, as well as a shop that sells the merchandise of the nightclubs. There is also a whole page for teh nightclub that shows what kind of events and DJ are going to perform at the nightclub.

The link will show a video of the users navigation around the website.
